Pewabic Pottery and Tile is a very old company located in Detroit.
Founded in 1903, it is renowned for its unique glazes. This backsplash
design was especially sized for this job so that no tiles were cut. The
entire pattern was first layed out on a nearby island counter to determine
proper spacing. go to Pewabic
Ceramic tile on your table top? Why
not? I first reinforced the table top
and legs, then topped it with 3/4" oak
plywood. The 13" tile was installed
using a premium latex-modified thin
set. The sister-in-law did a decent
job and loved her table.

Specializing In Good Work

The photos below are of a Beauty Salon I did in Birminghan Michigan a few years ago. The
clients wanted a floor that slapped you upside the head and made a statement. (If you know
Birmingham, you know what I mean).
The first picture below shows the design as we had put it on paper. When the clients came by
to see my work.....they hated the pattern and work stopped. We spent the rest of the
afternoon laying tiles loose on the floor to come up with a pattern that did not repeat itself and
was unique. I transferred our new basic design onto graph paper and later finalized the fine
touches myself. That evening back at the home office, I tried to draw every piece and color
them so I could be sure I had enough of each color. I found that because the job was being
set on a diagonal and the tiles had been special ordered, I had to get exact quantities of each
color. So....at about 2 a.m. I went back and drew an exact floor plan so that I could account for
every piece. By 5 a.m. I had it all figured out, made small adjustments in the pattern to
coincide with the amounts on hand.
II made the transition with a few rows of the
off-white tiles then set the rest according to
my new pattern on graph.
I must say.....I got many compliments and
the final work was outstanding!
The photo below shows more of the new pattern and how it is truly a one-of-a-kind
installation.
Once about 75% was set, we started to grout. Since these stores are all attached, there
was no easy way to get to the front with the grouting tools and supplies. Furthermore,
there is no water source on the street side of the buildings, and as you may know (?)
grouting requires lots of water for clean up. To overcome this I got 200 ft. of water hose
and hung it overhead to bring water to the front entry area.
